How to talk to guys: a guide to (not) failing at being awkward

1. Don’t make jokes if you are a terrible joke-teller. This also goes for the guys. If you get a “…?” response, don’t make another joke.

2. Don’t reference movies, music, or quotes over 25 years old – unless you know they’ll get what you’re trying to say. Just don’t do it. This also goes for the guys.

3. Talk about your future! Future schooling, future jobs, future destinations… etc.

4. Be serious. Unless they’re joking around. If I want a straight answer, I want a straight answer.

5. Ask questions. Nothing is more awkward than saying “oh yeah I want to be an accountant when I grow up” and having them not respond because you didn’t ask “what about you?” or because, really, what can you say to that?

6. Talk about exotic places. And what you would do if you live there. I don’t know about you, but if I lived in London and had unlimited cash (because my cohort in crime hunted down a leprechaun [to have as a pet] in Ireland and took money from it – uh, haven’t had this conversation before, nope…), I would definitely buy a truck-load of Maltesers and Toblerone.

7. Pretend like you’re talking with a friend. It’s much easier to talk about random stuff (like making London guards laugh and re-naming Jamaica “JAMaica”) than to freak out about saying the wrong thing or not.

Until next time, Em 🙂

Question time!

Questions come from Zia at Song Sung Blue!
1. Favourite band?
Right now I’d have to say The All American Rejects, although I don’t really have a favourite band cuz I listen to so much music
2. Do you like travelling?
Yes, yes, yes. I’m going to Australia next summer on exchange, and then in college I’m going to Europe on exchange!
3. What’s the item you always have in your purse?
A notepad. You never know when inspiration will strike (this is what I tell myself, but my room full of paper scraps tell another thing… obsessive note taking)
4. What makeup do you use?
5. What’s something that makes you happy?
Finding a great author and reading all of their books
6. Can you climb trees?
I haven’t tried, honestly, but I can climb fences… does that count?
7. What can you spend hours doing?
Reading. I think the fact that I read 9 books in 6 days pretty much tells you all you need to know
8. What kind of blogs do you like?
Funny ones, with embarrassing stories and such. And cupcake ones (I wouldn’t say I have a problem… I mean 100 or so bookmarks of recipes is research for when I open my own bakery… right?)
9. What celebrity would you like to meet?
David Boudia. Olympic diver extraordinaire.
10. What’s your favourite dessert?
Cupcakes! Or pudding. Or chocolate. All of them. I’ve always wanted to try a chocolate fountain…
11. What’s a random fact about your town?
Our library has a huge glass reading room in the back (that’s pretty much the most interesting thing that happens around here). And we have a lot of thrift stores.
Until next time, Em 🙂

OH CANADA!

This weekend I went up to the wondrous country of CANADA! Let me just say, Canada must be the country with the best looking guys (maybe Britain and Australia beat them…) because everywhere I turned there was another hot guy. Seriously. Also, I got a super-awesome Canada shirt (I have so much Canada apparel it’s not even funny). And I ate at Tim Horton’s. And drove through Surrey (I have wanted to go to the one in the UK ever since I saw The Holiday aka the movie where I can stare at Jude Law for 138 minutes). I also went on a super-cool treetop adventure where I walked around IN THE TREETOPS. All in all, a super  fun weekend! Except now I have to go back to school and take my finals. Sadness.

Until next time, Em 🙂
